Tour to Askja caldera and Herðubreiðarlindir.

Mývatn Tours offer a one-day guided tour from Lake Mývatn to the Askja Caldera and the nature reserve Herðubreiðarlindir. This tour provides scenes of unforgettable Icelandic nature and geology.

Tour description:

Askja is in the middle of the Icelandic highlands and it takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to drive there. Our trip starts and ends in the village Reykjahlíð in the Lake Mývatn area. Time of departure is 8am and we are back around 7 or 8 pm.

On the way up to Askja we stop a few times to have a closer look at the amazing landscape and geological wonders, such as lava fields, glacial rivers, freshwater rivers, natural springs and magnificent mountains. During these breaks the passengers also have time to sit down for a while inside a hut or outside in the grass and have a bite to eat, but there are no cafés or restaurants on the way. When the bus arrives at the parking space in Askja around 12am-1pm, our passengers get 2-2,5 hours free time. There is an approximately 35 min easy walk from the parking space to Askja lake and the Víti crater, where you can go for a swim if the conditions are good. After a short stop in Drekagil, 8km from Askja, we drive directly back to Reykjahlíð village.

The meeting point for the Askja tour is in the village Reykjahlíð by Kjörbúðin supermarket next to information center. You have to be there at 7:45 am because the bus leaves at 8am. The tour is approximately 11-12 hours so we are back to Reykjahlíð at 7 or 8pm.

Please bring to the Askja tour:
1) Warm clothes and good shoes, since the weather in the highlands is unpredictable and can change suddenly.
2) Food for the day. There are no supermarkets or restaurants on the way.
3) Towels so you can take a bath in the crater Víti if the conditions are good, it is quite steep down to the lake. The water is between 20°C-30°C hot.
4) Notice that you may have to walk in snow from the parking place in Askja to the Lake Askja, so it is best to have good shoes.

For Nature Bath:

You can go when it is best for you to take the bath but we recommend after the tour after long day. It is open until 12:00 in the evening.

The lagoon itself is a man-made construction, its bottom is covered by sand and gravel. The characteristics of the water are unique in many ways. It contains a large amount of minerals, is alkaline and well suited for bathing. Due to its chemical composition, undesired bacteria and vegetation do not thrive in the lagoon making chloride or any other disinfectant redundant.

Geothermal water in Iceland usually contains some sulfur. In this area the strength of the chemical is greater than others. Therefore is should be avoided to take jewelry from brass or silver into the water, they become black and can be damaged. Sulphur, however, is considered to have a positive effect on asthma and other respiratory diseases, and many of the trace elements in the water are considered to have a good effect on the development of skin problems.

Opening times:

 09:00 am  – 12:00 (midnight)
